Certainty of Flux (Poem 11 of 30: 2016)

What we are
What we become
Some dependent variable
Of our nature/nurture ratio
Losses and gains
Every day carves a bit of the final shape

When are we complete
Does it happen in our lifetime
Is it a posthumous realization
Made by our survivors
Or the post-self
Does the aftermath of the self
Have awareness or concern
For the skin shed
Does the cola cry for the beach glass
That was its bottle
Does the snake lament
The tight fit lost in the desert

Is the self a mass of gray
Something fleshy
That perishes and putrefies
Or is the self an electrical object
Energy fused with the infinite
Whether a soul
A natural phenomenon
Or both
There is a part within
Delineated by change
That cannot be destroyed
